Analysis: Michigan taps back into their Detroit pipeline with the commitment of CB Delonte Hollowell from Cass Technical HS. Cass Tech was home to other BCS level athletes such as: Teric Jones, Boubacar Cissoko, William Campbell, Thomas Gordon and Dior Mathis. When the Michigan offer arrived in the mail Delonte immediately knew he wanted to play football for his dream school and committed to being a Michigan Wolverine. The first thing that stood out about Delonte was his tackling. He hits the ball carrier full speed at the point of impact, wraps-up and drives them to the ground. His proper tackling form allows him to make powerful tackles and make consistent open field tackles. Delonte is a bit smaller than most of the receivers he will face but an advantage that he does have is in the jam or bump-and-run. He is not intimidated by taller receivers and enjoys getting in their faces and knocking them off their patterns. Delonte has good instincts and doesn’t usually get caught peeking the backfield. One thing Delonte does need work on is getting out of his back pedal. He has a tendency to back pedal past the point of where he should. The problem with doing that is receivers will be able to gain a small bit of separation from the defensive back having to adjust his speed to rotate his hips to keep up. Delonte doesn’t have as fluid of hips as most defensive backs in college have but with coaching and strength/conditioning work he will make a good player for Michigan’s defense.
As in most freshman I would expect Delonte to redshirt his freshman year to gain extra strength and weight and adjust to the level of football between high school and college. Delonte will have a strong Senior year and will hopefully make a repeat trip to San Antonio, TX where last year he was invited to the U.S. Army All-American Junior Combine and caught the eye of a lot of analysts. Keep checking back withTop Prospect Sports throughout the year, Midwest Recruiting Analyst David Danielson, will have plenty to say about this talented cornerback from Cass Tech HS.
